House of History Austria

HOUSE OF HISTORY AUSTRIA

The latest museum on Heldenplatz is dedicated to the history of Austria after the end of the monarchy. In this spirit, it opened its doors in the new castle on Heldenplatz exactly 100 years after the beginning of the First Republic on November 12, 1918.

Covering an area of 1800 m², the permanent exhibition deals with Austria's development from the First Republic through the period of National Socialism to today's Second Republic.

Under the title "Departure into the Uncertain - Austria since 1918", the controversial century of Austrian history is presented on the basis of seven key topics. In addition to topics such as Nazi terror, Austrian identity and its consciousness in changing times are also addressed. But the economic upswing after the Second World War and today's developments are not neglected either.

Exhibits such as the government bench from the large session hall in Parliament or the magnificent hangings of the imperial lodge from imperial and royal times are also on display. Times, illustrate the political change in 100 years.

In this sense, this museum also wants to give visitors impulses for a look into the future. The exhibition is intended to promote a constructive and future-oriented dialogue, as well as to stimulate reflection.
