BURGGARTEN

The Burggarten is a popular oasis in the middle of Vienna's city center, accessible all year round. The Albertina towers above the grounds and below it the elegant glass Palm House, which also impresses with its top-class café-restaurant.

Originally, the 38,000 square meter garden was laid out in 1818 under Emperor Franz as a private garden for the imperial family. The emperor, who was himself a trained gardener, personally oversaw the design of the grounds.

In 1919, the Burggarten was opened to the general public under the new name "Garden of the Republic". Characteristic monuments of the Burggarten are a statue of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a statue of Emperor Franz Joseph.

The castle garden is in English style and has a central pond.

Whether you want to stop by here in the early morning hours for a jog, or for an afternoon stroll - the Burggarten is a charming haven of peace in the middle of the city. And all year round!

Insider tip: In summer, on particularly hot days, the Burggarten is used by the Spanish Riding School as an exercise area for the Lippizaner horses! If you are lucky, you can watch two Lippizaner foals race here while enjoying an espresso on the Palm House terrace.
