University of Vienna

UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA

The University of Vienna is also a sight to behold as a magnificent building on Vienna's Ringstrasse and a historical center of knowledge transfer. The imposing main building at Schottentor was completed in 1884 according to plans by the architect Heinrich von Ferstel and was opened under Emperor Franz Joseph I. The University of Vienna is located on the Ringstrasse.

The building is modeled on the Italian Renaissance and is considered the oldest university in the German-speaking world.

On a guided tour of the extensive complex, you will pass through the picturesque arcaded courtyard, which is in the style of a "Campo Santo". Between the arcades you can discover monuments to important personalities.

But a special attraction is the large ballroom, the so-called "Aula". In it are perfectly shaped statues of Rudolf IV and Maria Theresa. And the ceiling paintings are reproductions of the exceptional artist Gustav Klimt. Another highlight of the tour is the university library and the large reading room. Here you will dive into a centuries-old world of books. Moreover, the historic reading room with its nostalgic flair is largely unchanged since its opening in the 19th century.

Tours take place every Saturday at 10:30 and Thursday at 18:00 in German, and do not require registration. The tour starts at the main entrance at Universitätsring 1.
