Capuchin Crypt
CAPUCHIN CRYPT
Another religious place of worship in the center of Vienna is the Capuchin Church with the Capuchin crypt inside, which runs from the corner of Neuer Markt to Tegttoffstraße.
In the basement of this house of God is the famous Imperial Crypt, where members of the Austrian imperial family are buried. A total of 149 members of the Habsburg family have been buried here since 1633. The most striking feature is the magnificent double sarcophagus of Maria Theresa and Franz Stephan of Lorraine, which is the work of the artist Balthasar Ferdinand Moll. The coffin of the reform emperor Joseph II, who was the son of Maira Theresa, is strikingly simple, even in the design of the sarcophagus.
The imperial crypt is located under the Capuchin Church and is intended for members of the former Austrian ruling house of Habsburg.

People have been buried in the crypt since 1633. 149 Habsburgs, including 12 emperors and 19 empresses and queens, have found their final resting place there. The magnificent double sarcophagus for Maria Theresa and her husband, Emperor Francis I Stephen of Lorraine, is the work of Balthasar Ferdinand Moll.
Of course, visitors can also see the coffins of Emperor Franz Joseph and Sisi, as well as his son Crown Prince Rudolf. The last Austrian Empress Zita was buried here in 1989, followed in 2011 by her eldest son and European politician Otto and his wife Regina. The hearts of the Habsburgs are in the nearby Augustinian Church.
Let yourself be inspired by this historical and mystical place, which has also found a place in world literature with the novel "The Capuchin Crypt" by the Austrian writer Joseph Roth.
