Austrian National Library

Austrian National Library

The Austrian National Library occupies an entire wing of the Hofburg Palace in downtown Vienna. Here there are treasures worth seeing with depth for young and old. For the National Library is the temple of Vienna's intellectual attractions.

The State Hall of the National Library, for example, is world famous. This was built by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach, who followed the plans of his father Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. And the result is impressive: The 80-meter-long and 20-meter-high hall is a breathtaking sight. The crowning glory is a dome painted with frescoes by the court painter Daniel Gran.

The exhibition also includes 200,000 volumes that give the precious hall its spiritual weight.

As part of a visit to the National Library, you can also visit the associated Globe Museum and Papyrus Museum.
Among the globes on display are two magnificent Venetian globes, one meter in diameter, from the Baroque period. One of them represents the sky, the other the earth.

The various guided tour formats also include special programs for children. For example, there is an interactive children's tour of the papyrus collection. The guided tour "Of vanished lands and foreign languages" in the Globe Museum is also an enrichment for children!
