St. Stephen's Cathedral
AUGUSTINE CHURCH
Dhe St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna is Vienna's characteristic landmark and at the same time the city center. As such, it is also known to the Viennese as "Steffl".
Internationally, it enjoys great attention because of its architectural and art-historical peculiarities. For the cathedral is an artistic masterpiece at the highest European level.

Historical
Beginnings of the present cathedral date back to 1147. But the Albertine choir is the oldest completely preserved part of the world-famous building and dates back to 1340, so it is a masterpiece of Gothic style with some late Romanesque remains.
After a bombing raid in the 2nd World War, the cathedral could be restored in 1945 with united forces. Therefore, St. Stephen's Cathedral is also considered a sign of reconstruction and armistice.
In the famous south tower of St. Stephen's Cathedral there is an ensemble of 13 bells. But the jewel of the bells is in the north tower.
There hangs the famous "Pummerin", which is rung only on special feast days. It is one of Europe's largest free-swinging church bells. Accordingly, it reaches a weight of over 20,000 kilos.
