MAK

MUSEUM OF APPLIED ART

The MAK - Museum of Applied Arts, is located on Stubenring, close to Wien Mitte on the edge of the city center. The Ringstrasse building, built under Emperor Franz-Joseph I, was the original "k.k.. Austrian Museum of Art and Industry".

MAK

Even today, the MAK is entirely dedicated to the world of design. In this sense, one can admire handicrafts, furniture, glass, silver and textiles from different eras. Starting from the Middle Ages to the present day, styles of the Wiener Werkstätte are represented with Art Nouveau and Biedermeier exhibits.

A separate exhibition is devoted exclusively to the bentwood furniture of the Austrian family-owned company Thonet. In addition, there is an impressive display collection of carpets, as well as a display collection for Chinese porcelain and other arts and crafts from Asia.

The whole thing fits into a documentation about the development of the own Viennese style in connection with the International Style. Of course, the objects are also used to explain contemporary historical, political currents.

Apart from that, the MAK continuously organizes interesting exhibitions of contemporary artists. This always reflects the relationship between art and everyday life, as well as a strong aspect to current events.

Around the museum

The MAK Design Shop offers art to take home. Then the in-house restaurant "Salonplafond" invites you to take a culinary break. In summer, the picturesque garden is the perfect place to do so.

Just a few steps away from the MAK, above the ring is the traditional Café Prückel. So all tastes are covered!
