VOLKSGARTEN

The Volksgarten is immediately adjacent to the Burggarten, and is best known for its enchanting rose garden. This park is also part of the Hofburg complex and was originally a fortress site since the 16th century. However, the fortifications were destroyed by Napoleon's troops in 1809. Only after that, the garden complex was constructed in the early 19th century by landscape architect Ludwig Remy and finally completed in 1823. From this time on, the Volksgarten was Vienna's first public park.

In the center of the Volksgarten stands the neoclassical Theseus Temple, built according to the plans of Pietro di Nobile. The temple is a small replica of the Temple of Hephaestus in Athens, and was originally intended to house the statue of Theseus by Antonio Canova. Therefore, Canova himself was also involved in the construction of the temple. Eventually, however, the statue ended up in the Museum of Art History next door.

Another fixed point in the Volksgarten is the imposing Grillparzer Monument by Carl Kundmann. But also the seated Empress Elisabeth by Hans Bitterlich impresses as a marble statue of a height of 2.5 meters.

The two fountains in the Volksgarten are also popular meeting places. These are the Triton Nymphs Fountain by Viktor Tilgner and the Volksgarten Fountain by A.D. Fernkorn.

But the highlight is and remains the Rose Garden, which awaits you on the Ringstrasse side of the Volksgarten. Here, 400 different types of roses bloom in summer on more than 3000 rose bushes. An inspiring place!

For refreshment, we recommend the Cafe-Meierei in the Volksgarten. In this picturesque pavilion you can have breakfast to your heart's content or enjoy a Viennese melange.
