Metro Kinokulturhaus

Discover the best attractions in Vienna and plan unforgettable experiences.

At the Metro cinema in Johannesgasse in Vienna’s city centre, film aficionados will certainly get their money’s worth. Because this new cinema culture house has devoted itself entirely to the high art of the picture-house.

Namely, in this listed cinema hall from the year 1893, you get to see unique retrospectives and homages. But interesting temporary exhibitions, too, are shown in this historic culture house, which was converted into a theatre in 1924.

But today the Metro cinema reflects on its roots again and presents itself as a unique film theatre. Because with the red-upholstered seating sets and the cosy wood panelling, the cinema hall is regarded as one of the most beautiful in all of Vienna.

The exhibitions, too, which can be seen on the two floors above the cinema, revolve around the theme. Display collections about film and the history of cinema offer a comprehensive complement to the film shows and retrospectives shown. The main source of the exhibited material goes back to the Filmarchiv Austria, which is expanding its activities here.

The subject areas around film and cinema can be experienced here in all their aspects. Discover the cultural, social and historical dimensions of the film world from a new perspective!
