Servus and welcome to Vienna!

Vienna is the capital of the Republic of Austria and, at the same time, one of Austria’s nine federal states. With around 1.9 million inhabitants, Vienna, set on the Danube, is Austria’s most populous city, the second largest in the German-speaking world and the sixth largest city in the European Union. Roughly 2.8 million people live in the greater Vienna area, which corresponds to about a third of Austria’s total population.
Architecturally, Vienna is still shaped above all by the Gründerzeit buildings around the Vienna Ringstraße, as well as by Baroque and Art Nouveau. Through its role as the imperial capital and residence city of the Austrian Empire from 1804, Vienna became a cultural and political centre of Europe in the 19th century. Around 1910, when Vienna was still the capital of the Habsburg Monarchy, the city was the fifth largest in the world, with over two million inhabitants.
