ALBERTINA MODERN opened in the renovated Künstlerhaus at Karlsplatz in 2020 and is one of Vienna’s major museums for modern and contemporary art. Its collection comprises tens of thousands of works by thousands of artists.
The museum focuses on important artistic developments from 1945 to the present. Visitors can discover works by major Austrian artists such as Hermann Nitsch, VALIE EXPORT, Maria Lassnig, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, Gottfried Helnwein and Christian Ludwig Attersee.
International artists are also strongly represented, including major names such as Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Anselm Kiefer and Damien Hirst.
Two important collections form a central part of the museum’s holdings. The Essl Collection places particular emphasis on Austrian art from the post-war period to the present and covers movements including Fantastic Realism, Viennese Actionism, postmodernism and contemporary art.
The historic 19th-century Künstlerhaus provides an impressive architectural setting for the museum’s exhibitions.
