The MAK – Museum of Applied Arts is located on Stubenring near Wien Mitte. The historic Ringstrasse building was originally constructed during the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I for the Imperial Royal Austrian Museum of Art and Industry.
Today, the MAK focuses on applied arts, design and the relationship between art and everyday life. Its collections include furniture, glass, silver, textiles and decorative arts from the Middle Ages to the present.
The museum is particularly known for objects connected with the Vienna Secession, Wiener Werkstätte and Biedermeier period, as well as its collection of bentwood furniture by the Austrian company Thonet.
Other important collections include carpets, Asian art and porcelain, providing a broad overview of decorative and applied arts across different cultures and periods.
The MAK also regularly presents exhibitions by contemporary artists and designers, often exploring the relationship between design, society and current issues.
Around the museum
The MAK Design Shop offers books, design objects and gifts, while the museum restaurant provides a convenient place for a break during a visit.
The traditional Café Prückel is also located just a short walk away across the Ringstrasse.
