The famous Vienna Christmas markets (Christkindlmärkte), also called Weihnachtsmärkte, are an annual attraction for tourists and locals alike! Moreover, they go back to the old tradition of the Viennese annual markets. These were abolished in 1872 by a decision of the city council, because they were no longer considered up to date. The only annual markets that were an exception were those held shortly before Christmas. And from these arose the so-called Christkindlmärkte.

At Rathausplatz, the pre-Christmas atmosphere runs at full speed. This Christmas market has a certain party flair and the mood is reminiscent of après-ski. Here you find culinary delicacies in huge quantities and all the kinds of punch you can imagine. Plus a large selection of kitsch and glamour.

The Christmas market at Stephansplatz, too, specialises in culinary treats. These are arranged in small huts in a semicircle around the cathedral. But you also find elegance and luxury items here.
Further popular Christmas markets are located at Maria-Theresien-Platz, at Spittelberg, on the university campus in the old AKH, and in front of Belvedere Palace. But for explorers, it is best to simply set off and find your own personal favourite market!
