The House of Austrian History at Heldenplatz is dedicated to Austria’s history from the end of the Habsburg monarchy to the present day. The museum opened in 2018, exactly 100 years after the proclamation of the First Republic.
Its permanent exhibition explores Austria’s development from the First Republic through the period of National Socialism and into the Second Republic.
The exhibition examines major themes in 20th- and 21st-century Austrian history, including dictatorship and Nazi terror, changing ideas of Austrian identity, economic development after the Second World War and contemporary society.
Historic objects such as political furnishings and artefacts from the imperial period help illustrate the dramatic changes Austria experienced over the course of the century.
The museum also encourages visitors to consider how history continues to shape the present and future, creating space for reflection and discussion.
