Strandbad Gänsehäufel is one of Vienna’s most popular outdoor swimming destinations. On sunny summer days, its beaches and extensive recreational facilities make it one of the city’s favourite places to cool down and relax.
Located in the Donaustadt district, the bathing area lies on a wooded island in the Old Danube. The island was originally formed from deposited sand and gravel and was once used for keeping geese, which gave the Gänsehäufel its name.
The island began to be used for bathing around 1900, and Vienna’s municipal Strandbad am Gänsehäufel opened in 1907. After being completely destroyed during the Second World War, the complex reopened in 1950.
Today, Gänsehäufel offers a huge variety of ways to spend a summer day away from the bustle of the city.
The island has several bathing beaches, including the West Beach with a dedicated children’s section, the South Beach and the East Beach, which also includes a separate naturist area.
There are also several swimming pools in the centre of the island, including a multi-purpose pool, wave pool, children’s pool with a water slide and a water-play area. Families can make use of a dedicated parent-and-child area, while spacious lawns provide plenty of room for sunbathing.
Gänsehäufel also offers an impressive range of sports and leisure activities. Facilities include football, beach volleyball, basketball, miniature golf, table tennis and tennis courts, as well as a fitness area with exercise equipment. Another highlight is the high-rope climbing course, while younger visitors can enjoy the inflatable play area.
