Demel, the historic café and confectionery on Kohlmarkt in Vienna’s city centre, is a paradise for anyone with a sweet tooth. Once an Imperial and Royal Court Confectioner, Demel even tempted Empress Elisabeth, despite her famously strict diet. Those familiar with her story know that she was particularly fond of violet ice cream.

The open bakery offers an opportunity to watch Demel’s pastry chefs at work and discover some of the craftsmanship behind its famous creations. One of Vienna’s best-known culinary stories concerns the Original Sacher-Torte, versions of which are served both at Demel and at Café Sacher.
Both houses have played an important role in the history of Vienna’s famous chocolate cake, and the story behind the two versions has become part of the city’s culinary heritage.
