In the beautiful Vienna district of Ottakring, alongside the famous brewery, there is another special feature. On the Gallitzinberg, a charming 19th-century observatory awaits you. Built in the Historicist style back in imperial and royal times by the industrialist Moritz Kuffner, who was also the owner of the Ottakringer Brewery. The classical building still fulfils its purpose today as a small Viennese planetarium.
During a visit, you can inspect a large collection of 19th-century astronomical instruments. Among them are four telescopes with a Great Refractor, meridian circle and vertical circle. These were restored between 1993 and 2000. Today they are used exclusively in the museum or for educational purposes.
Visitors can view this historic observatory all year round and, in good weather, even receive an astronomical guided tour through the starry sky above Vienna. And that with the help of the large telescope from 1886.
