The OstLicht Gallery and the WestLicht Museum of Photography are Vienna’s mecca for photo aficionados.
In Westbahnstraße, in Vienna’s hip 7th district, the WestLicht Museum of Photography shows not only the most valuable historical cameras but also unique photographs. Among the important devices are, for example, spy cameras in cigarette packets that were used by the KGB. But even a camera from space is on display. At the WestLicht Museum you can marvel at one of the cameras that was taken along on the Apollo Moon mission. In addition, there are numerous cameras for underwater photography, built-in models for walking sticks or toy cameras.
Among the numerous photography exhibitions, the “World Press Photo Show” is the absolute highlight of the year. Here you can impressively marvel at the best press images published worldwide.
As a counterpart to WestLicht, the OstLicht Gallery was added in June 2012, housed in a former Ankerbrot factory in Absberggasse in the 10th district. Here you get to see fascinating works by contemporary “shooting stars”. These are changing group exhibitions in an ambience shaped by the charming industrial design of the old bread factory.
The associated library with 20,000 books and magazines also invites you to a relaxed afternoon. Afterwards, you can round off the excursion comfortably at the in-house bar.
