The Burggarten is a popular oasis in the middle of Vienna’s city centre, accessible all year round. Above the grounds towers the Albertina, and below it the elegant glass Palm House, which also impresses with its high-class café-restaurant.
Originally, the 38,000-square-metre garden was laid out in 1818 under Emperor Franz as a private garden for the imperial family. The emperor, who was himself a trained gardener, personally directed the design of the grounds.
In 1919, the Burggarten was opened to the general public under the new name “Garden of the Republic”. Characteristic monuments of the Burggarten are a statue of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a statue of Emperor Franz Joseph.
The Burggarten is designed in the English style and has a central pond.
Whether you want to come by for a jog in the early morning hours or for an afternoon stroll, the Burggarten is an enchanting haven of calm in the middle of the city. And that all year round!
Insider tip: in summer, on particularly hot days, the Burggarten is used by the Spanish Riding School as an exercise area for the Lipizzaners! If you are lucky, over an espresso on the Palm House terrace you can watch two Lipizzaner foals race each other here.
