The Vienna Prater is one of Vienna’s most popular leisure and recreation areas. Its name dates back to the 12th century and goes back to the „de Prato“ family.
Originally, the large wooded territory was an imperial hunting ground. But under Joseph II, the Prater was made accessible to the general public in the 18th century.
Today, Vienna’s largest park stretches along the 5 km long Prater Hauptallee, past playing meadows, running tracks and barbecue areas.
The culinary highlight of the Prater is the Lusthaus. In this former imperial hunting lodge, you are treated to Austrian cuisine of the highest level all year round. The Congress of Vienna has already dined here as well.
On the extensive meadows along the picturesque groves of trees, countless opportunities for sporting activities present themselves.
And the Ernst Happel Stadium also emphasises the sporting character of the Viennese recreation area as Austria’s largest sports arena.
Wurstelprater
The Wurstelprater gradually emerged from a collection of various entertainment offerings in the Prater. The world-famous Ferris wheel forms the crowning glory of this Viennese amusement park. As one of Vienna’s landmarks, the Ferris wheel invites you on a romantic ride, on which you can overlook Vienna from a total height of 64.75 metres. When it was built in 1897, the Vienna Ferris wheel was the largest in the world.
Today, visitors find a wide range of game booths, roller coasters, carousels and snack stalls. The world-famous Viennese amusement park impresses young people in particular with its latest technologies in an extensive entertainment offering.
