The Kahlenberg, as Vienna’s local mountain, is a popular sight and excursion destination, for the local population and tourists alike. Located in the Döbling district, it is a 484-metre-high elevation of the Vienna Woods (Wienerwald). As such, the Kahlenberg delivers heavenly views over the whole of Vienna and even as far as the Little Carpathians in Slovakia.
The Kahlenberg was first cultivated in the 17th century, when Ferdinand II had the church of St. Joseph built on the high plateau, around which the hamlet of Josefsdorf later emerged. Today you can explore the Kahlenberg via numerous hiking trails. For example, you can thus reach the Stephanie Lookout (Stefaniewarte) at the highest point of the mountain.
Waldseilpark Kahlenberg (Forest Rope Park)
Another highlight for young and old is the legendary forest rope park on the Kahlenberg. Here you can swing over the treetops like Tarzan and thus experience a walk of a special kind in the Vienna Woods. And there are many different route options, marked according to level of difficulty. With a breathtaking view, you can look at Vienna here from a completely new perspective.

And if your stomach rumbles after the high-altitude adventure, we recommend a visit to the neighbouring Josefinenhütte. Here you are guaranteed to get your money’s worth in culinary terms too.
On the other hand, at the foot of the Kahlenberg, the odd Heuriger (wine tavern) also entices with seasonal, local food and drinks, as well as with a “super-cosy” and authentically Viennese atmosphere!
