In the Donaustadt district, on the other side of the Danube, you will find the generous Donaupark. As tall as the Danube Tower located in the park is, so varied is the park surrounding it. This garden complex was designed on the occasion of the International Garden Show of 1964 and is home to, among other things, the 30,000-square-metre Donaupark Iris Lake (Irissee).
The Iris Lake now has a diverse flora and fauna and offers many opportunities for nesting sites. Material extracted from this lake forms the substance of the Kaffeehausberg (Coffee House Hill) in the Donaupark, which since the 1980s has no longer housed a coffee house. The large meadows, the Butterfly Meadow (Schmetterlingswiese) and the Pope’s Meadow (Papstwiese), are suitable for sporting events and other functions.
But on a walk through the park you will also discover the magnificent rose gardens, the various allotment gardens and several playgrounds. A tennis court and a mini-golf course are also available.
And if you need some refreshment, there are the two restaurants at the dizzying heights of the Danube Tower, or a Chinese restaurant at the exit towards the U1 station “Alte Donau”.
