The Akademietheater in Lisztstraße in the 3rd district has been used by the Burgtheater as a second venue since 1922. With its full name as the “Theatre of the Academy of Music and Performing Arts”, it is the result of many efforts by the Burgtheater ensemble to have a venue on a smaller scale. This is reflected at the Akademietheater above all in the unique construction of the stage. Because it allows an extraordinary closeness between actors and audience.
After the Akademietheater was completed in 1913 according to plans by the architects Helmer, Fellner and Baumann, the Burgtheater under Max Paulsen was finally able to take it over. The opening play at the Akademietheater was Goethe’s “Iphigenia in Tauris”.
The building in Lisztstraße survived the Second World War undamaged and was finally reopened on 19 May 1945 with Ibsen’s play “Hedda Gabler”.
Since then, the Akademietheater has established itself very well in the Viennese stage world and is among the best theatre venues. As such, it also regularly wins awards at renowned theatre festivals.
Celebrated international performers and directors have also contributed to the first-class reputation of the Akademietheater!
