Theater in der Josefstadt

Alongside the English Theatre, Vienna’s 8th district holds another gem of the Viennese theatre scene. In the Theater in der Josefstadt you will find the oldest theatre in Vienna, which has been in continuous operation since its foundation. Thus the Theater in der Josefstadt is not only known for high-calibre spoken-word theatre in Vienna, but is also steeped in Viennese theatre history.

Since its opening in 1788, the Theater in der Josefstadt has been a meeting place for dynamic artistic circles and today sees itself as a modern theatre. But alongside contemporary authors, classics of the theatre scene are still performed here.

Johann Nestroy already began his career as an actor in this theatre in 1829. Ferdinand Raimund chose the venue in 1834 for the premiere of his play “Der Verschwender” (The Spendthrift).

A branch of the Theater in der Josefstadt is also the so-called Kammerspiele near Schwedenplatz. Here the Josefstadt preferentially shows comedies with Austrian “grandees” of the theatre world.
