At the Burgtheater, an actor has reached the Olympus of the Austrian stage world. As the largest spoken-word theatre in Europe, it represents a unique fusion of tradition and the new.
The Burgtheater originally began around the year 1800 in a ballroom of the Hofburg, which was temporarily used as a theatre. Even in this informal setting, the Burgtheater quickly gained international renown and is still setting the tone for German-language theatre worldwide today.
Nowadays, with its representative, magnificent building on the Universitätsring, the Burgtheater has also found a fitting setting. The palace goes back to designs by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer, was completed in 1888 and completely renovated from 1948 to 1955 after severe war damage.
The fine arts also find their place in the building. On a one-hour guided tour, visitors can, among other things, marvel at a self-portrait by Gustav Klimt. After a glance upwards at the magnificent ceiling paintings, you also get a look behind the scenes!
