In the Volkstheater at Arthur-Schnitzler-Platz in the 7th district you will find the so-called “middle-class counterpart” to the Burgtheater. The Volkstheater was opened in 1889 and is among the most important German-language theatres of the international scene.
The programme of this theatre was focused from the very beginning on the repertoire of Austrian and German authors. In this sense, the exterior of the theatre is also reminiscent of the Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, which, like the Vienna Volkstheater, was built according to the plans of Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer.
The programme of the Volkstheater includes, alongside international classics, contemporary performances too, and it also plays the Volkstheater in the districts as well as the Volx/Margarethen.
After a moving performance in the theatre, the in-house bar is regarded as a further attraction at the Volkstheater. The so-called “Red Bar” is a sight in its own right. As a theatrical springboard into Vienna’s nightlife, this theatre café is open every evening. Among other things, themed salons and live concerts also take place here.
