In Bankgasse in Vienna’s city centre, the magnificent City Palace Liechtenstein is located right by the Volkstheater and the Burggarten. Alongside the family’s Garden Palace in the 9th district, the City Palace is also an art-historical gem.
As the private property of the Liechtenstein family, it is open to the public for visits. Over its 300-year existence, this magnificent building has become inseparable from the history of Vienna. Moreover, the City Palace Liechtenstein is the first Viennese building in the High Baroque style.
This is already evident upon entering, in the impressive ceremonial staircases. And the impression continues in the palace’s rooms with their Baroque stucco ceilings. The interior is designed in the Neo-Rococo style and lets you step into times gone by.
In the process, you are also introduced to the princely family’s private art collection. These are masterpieces of the Viennese art scene of Classicism and the Biedermeier period.
As for the history of the City Palace, it was first commissioned in 1691 by Count D. A. Kaunitz and finally completed under Prince Johann Adam Andreas I of Liechtenstein. The plans were provided by the architect Enrico Zuccalli, while Domenico Martinelli created the monumental Baroque portal at the entrance. As early as the 19th century, the palace was also technically state of the art. In this respect, it was known for its highly modern lift construction and its in-house intercom system. After severe damage from bomb strikes in the Second World War, the architectural work of art shines today in new splendour and awaits your visit!
