The Vienna Palace of Justice at Schmerlingplatz dates from the 19th century and is designed in the Neo-Renaissance style. Today the building houses the Supreme Court, the Procurator General’s Office, the Higher Regional Court and the Senior Public Prosecutor’s Office of Vienna. The Ministry of Justice is now located in the opposite Palais Trautson.
The magnificent building goes back to the architect Alexander Wielemans von Monteforte. The sculptor Emanuel Pendl designed the impressive lions on the grand staircase, as well as the marble statue of the goddess Justitia with a golden sword and a book of law in the main hall (Aula).
Inside the Palace of Justice, the magnificent Aula fascinates with its central staircase balustrade and the coats of arms of the former crown lands of Austria. The Aula extends over 3 floors with arcades and is covered by a glass roof.
Insider tip: after visiting the Palace of Justice, a visit to the in-house café is a good idea! This is located on the top floor directly above the main entrance and is accessible to the public. In addition, it offers a beautiful panorama in a magnificent setting!
