The Vienna City Hall is an outstanding sight in the category of Vienna’s non-ecclesiastical buildings. Designed in the Neo-Gothic style, this special Ringstraße jewel embodies the official seat of the Mayor of Vienna.
Rathausplatz, too, is a fixed part of the programme for every visit to Vienna. Because here not only various cultural events but also highlights from the entertainment industry take place. All year round, seasonal highlights await you here. Whether it is the Christkindlmarkt before Christmas, the Wiener Eistraum (Vienna Ice Dream) in spring, or the open-air screen operas in summer. From time to time there is even a circus here.
In addition, there are free guided tours through the City Hall building three times a week. These take place on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 13:00 and offer interesting discoveries about the city of Vienna.
History and architecture
In front of the building itself, the Rathauspark was completed. It was designed in 1873 by the city gardener Rudolph Siebeck. Only then was the foundation stone of the City Hall laid, whose construction was finished after 10 years of work.
With bricks as the base material, the facade of the City Hall was clad with natural stone. This includes materials such as slate, marble and limestone. The 103-metre-high main tower is crowned with the so-called Rathausmann. Alongside it there are four further towers.
The magnificent rooms of the City Hall likewise provide a setting for cultural events.
