The University of Vienna, too, is a sight in its own right as a magnificent building on the Vienna Ringstraße and a historic centre of learning. The imposing main building at Schottentor was completed in 1884 according to plans by the architect Heinrich von Ferstel and opened under Emperor Franz Joseph I.
The building is modelled on the Italian Renaissance and is considered the oldest university in the German-speaking world.
On a tour through the extensive complex, you cross the picturesque arcaded courtyard, which is designed in the style of a “Campo Santo”. Between the arcades you can discover monuments of important personalities.
But a special attraction is the great ceremonial hall, the so-called “Aula”. It contains perfectly formed statues of Rudolf IV and Maria Theresa. And the ceiling paintings are reproductions by the exceptional artist Gustav Klimt. Another highlight of the tour is the university library and the large reading room. Here you immerse yourself in a centuries-old world of books. In addition, the historic reading room with its nostalgic flair has remained largely unchanged since its opening in the 19th century.
Guided tours take place on Saturdays at 10:30 and Thursdays at 18:00 in German, and require no registration. The tour starts at the main entrance at Universitätsring 1.
