Vienna International Centre
The so-called “UNO City” of Vienna is, alongside the seats in Nairobi, Geneva and New York, one of the four headquarters of the United Nations. The Vienna International Centre (VIC) is thus an important centre of worldwide UN activities to promote peace, human rights and sustainable development.
In this sense, the UN office, where around 5,000 employees work, is a Vienna sight of global significance. Because from here, not only is the peaceful use of nuclear and space technologies ensured, but the testing of nuclear weapons is also restricted. In addition, the UN fights against worldwide poverty, drug use, crime and terrorism.
You get insights into details about the methods and working practices of the UN on a multilingual guided tour through the UNO City of Vienna. In addition to a conference hall, you can also get to know the tasks of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) and UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees).
A special highlight is the piece of moon rock exhibited here by NASA. But art lovers, too, get their money’s worth here. Because at the VIC there are also exhibitions of original works by well-known artists such as Hundertwasser, Nitsch, etc. to be seen.
The guided tours usually take place from Monday to Friday at 11:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and require no prior registration. Registration is only necessary for groups of more than 10 people. The tour formats also include an interactive human rights tour and a holiday activity tour for children between 6 and 13 years old during the holidays. Do not forget to bring a photo ID!
