Burgtheater

The Burgtheater in Vienna’s 1st municipal district is an Austrian federal theatre. The tradition-steeped Burgtheater has achieved world fame. It is considered one of the most important stages in Europe. After the Comédie-Française, the Burgtheater is the second-oldest European and the largest German-language spoken-word theatre. The theatre was built as early as 1748.

Theater Nestroyhof Hamakom

The Jewish-inflected Theater Nestroyhof Hamakom takes up, in a unique way, themes such as interpersonal conversation, exclusion, racism and emigration in our society. Visitors are offered a wide variety of exhibitions, film screenings, readings and book presentations. In addition, they are introduced to Jewish culture.

Raimund Theater

The well-known Raimund Theater was named after the Austrian playwright Ferdinand Raimund. An association of Mariahilf citizens founded the theatre back in 1893. Today the history-steeped house belongs to the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien. Mainly musicals are performed at the Raimund Theater in Vienna’s 6th municipal district. At the moment the theatre is being renovated and rebuilt.

Akademietheater

The Akademietheater in Vienna’s 3rd district was built almost 100 years ago. Today, contemporary German-language plays in particular are performed here. The plays are intended above all to inspire a young audience for the theatre. The history-steeped Akademietheater belongs to the Burgtheater Vienna. Since 1920 the Akademietheater has been used as a chamber-play stage.

Theatre for children

Are you looking for a suitable theatre for your children? In Vienna there are numerous theatres that have specialised in entertaining the very youngest. One example is Kabarett Niedermair, a popular insider tip. Among other things, performances by the famous children’s book author Astrid Lindgren are staged here. The Theater der Jugend, too, is particularly popular.

Theater in der Josefstadt

The Theater in der Josefstadt, in Vienna’s 8th municipal district Josefstadt, is the oldest existing theatre in Vienna. The Theater an der Josephstadt is regarded as one of the most successful theatres of the German-language theatre scene. More than 350,000 people attend the over 700 performances per season. The theatre building is a real architectural gem and truly worth a visit.

Vienna’s English Theatre

Vienna’s English Theatre in Vienna’s 8th municipal district is a purely English-language theatre. The well-known theatre was founded in 1963. This makes it the oldest English-language theatre in Europe outside Great Britain. In 1974, Vienna’s English Theatre found its definitive venue at today’s location in the Josefstadt with the European premiere.

Volksoper

The Volksoper offers you a varied and diverse programme. Here you can enjoy world-famous operetta, opera, musical and ballet performances. The Volksoper was built 120 years ago. Volkstheater

The Volkstheater was formerly called Deutsches Volkstheater. The theatre in Vienna’s 7th municipal district was built back in 1889. Hermann Helmer and Ferdinand Fellner made the designs for the history-steeped building. Visitors find the Viennese theatre opposite the Natural History Museum. It is regarded as one of the largest theatres in the German-speaking world.

Viennese Cabaret

Vienna has always been known for its humour. Friends of humour can choose in Vienna between the most varied outstanding cabarets. The Stadtsaal on the Mariahilfer Straße shopping mile is one of the most popular cabarets in the city. Another really good cabaret is Kabarett Niedermair. Theater Akzent

The Theater Akzent was opened around 1989 in Vienna’s 4th municipal district by the Vienna Chamber of Labour as part of the Adolf Czettel Education Centre. Over the years, the Theater Akzent has been able to establish itself as a fixed point in Viennese cultural life. Three different theatre halls are available to visitors. The programme deals with current social topics.

Theater an der Wien

The well-known Theater an der Wien lies on the Linke Wienzeile in Vienna’s 6th municipal district, Mariahilf. It is operated as an association of the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien. Since the beginning of 2006 it has borne the byname “The new opera house”. Visitors have over 1,129 seats and 50 standing places available at the Theater an der Wien. Musikverein

The Vienna Musikverein in the first district is known worldwide as a tradition-steeped concert house. The famous Great Musikverein Hall is regarded as one of the most beautiful and acoustically best halls in the world.

Ronacher Theater

The Ronacher Theater was formerly known as the Etablissement Ronacher. It was initially built as the Vienna City Theatre from 1871 to 1872 in Vienna’s 1st municipal district. Just like the Raimund Theater and the Theater an der Wien, it belongs to the venues of the Vereinigte Bühnen Wien. Today, mainly musicals are performed at the Ronacher Theater.
